my phone arrived today
not as a Sweet Sixteen
prize
opened wildly
with a great tearing of
birthday paper wrapping
and bows.

my phone arrived
by way of internet shopping
Amazon.com delivered

the pubescent
pink pearl beauty
to my doorstep
to my anxiously
awaiting arms.

was i really deprived?
all those years
beige phones and black phones
silver and teal
rosy red and marine blue
but no pink

like the Barbies I coveted
but could never own

my pink princess
my instant messenger
taking me back to
a lost youth
a quieter time

when phones had cords
and life waited
for the jangling
ring.
