A staff writer once asked me: “How many Katrina Lisings are there?”
“I don’t know how many Katrina Lisings there are out there,” I replied. “But there is only one me.”
“No,” he corrected me.
“There is you plus a variable.” I looked at him, confused and intrigued. He smiled the sly smile of triumph he assumes
after stumping someone with one of his philosophical questions.
“There is you and everyone’s perception of you. Each person here has their own version of you based on what
they know of you and/or have heard about you. Then there is the real you.”
I realized then that in a sense we are all living in a mesh of illusions, those that we have created for
others and those that we are a part of through others. These illusions keep us in a protective shell, cupping
all that is vulnerable,
fragile, and real. Only through art and writing can the most honest kind of truth
emerge. All that is painful and all that is dark, can be transformed into something beautiful and colorful.
Through art and creative writing, artists and writers share pieces of their reality. Knowing this, I was touched
by each and every piece I’ve read, especially those from the Litrus staff. I am proud to say that everyone on staff
has shared some beautiful version of the truth this issue. I feel very fortunate to be blessed with such a talented
staff. Thank you for all your hard work.
We’ve also had a tremendous amount of submissions come in for this issue from the rest of the Citrus College
community. Thank you for your participation and support. It’s truly humbling to read such creative and eloquently
written pieces. The art and photography are also amazing. All I can say is keep them coming. Thank you to all the
teachers for encouraging your students to submit their work and allowing us to come and speak in your classes.
To all the readers: Thank you for your continuous support. Have fun surfing, and feel free to give us some feedback.
We would love to hear from you! Write us at citruslit@yahoo.com or check out our Myspace page at www.myspace.com/litrus.
