Fairy art: The Magic of Betsy Holmes
Betsy Holmes is an artist of skill and imagination. For two semesters she has been a part of Litrus, bringing worlds of creativity to the publication. Lately, fairies have been her bag. Whether they are cavorting in shining forest glades, lurking in night shadows or plumbing the ocean depths, Betsy’s fairies have a palpable presence.
Betsy likes clothes so, of course, they are impeccably dressed, and they wear
their garments with great poise.
She likes a challenge, so this time around she’s added some male fairies. Whether adorned with water crystals or billowing seaweed, the fairies of Sandcora, an underwater kingdom of Betsy’s invention, demand a second look. And it’s best to look close because, though her magic friends look sweet, they can have a deadly bite.
Sandair
Dark cold crashing secret unknown:
There lies under the sea the queen of Sandcora,
Who guides the fairies with her power,
Keeping all that is right.
—Betsy Holmes
Fin
Dark earth from the sea,
Eyes that glow through water
His world is one of green swimming seas
His skin is like soft feathers
Fin keeps the warrior in him
Strong for his home in Sandcora
—Betsy Holmes
Lita
Wings like clear crystals, eyes so blue
You can’t see them in the sea
Cold as her heart, veins that beat through her body
Power that comes from her clothes, with fabric
Streaming down her body
She glows like fireflies in day and night
But only when it’s safe
But she’s not all sweetness; in the sea,
Darkness takes her from good
Lita’s eyes turn black with red veins, and her teeth
Become like piranhas
Evil, she becomes, when seekers with their spears
Try to catch her by her wings
—Betsy Holmes
Rogin
Rogin possesses the underworld,
And protects the hidden water crystals.
Rogin’s power is to shimmer through
All the sea, to keep all from death.
—Betsy Holmes
Cora
Cora lives under the sea,
dark beneath the sounds
of the water where she and the others live.
Humans try to see them, but they hide away
From what they call “The Catchers.”
Cora has a power that throws
her energy like no other.
Her fingers shoot sparks like
lightning in a storm.
