Words
are amazing things, if you think about it. Right now, reading
this, you may be at home, maybe you are on campus, but regardless
of where your body is, right now your mind is here with me.
With the words I type, I can take you anywhere I want to,
and you will have to come with me. Sure, you could just stop
reading, but that wouldn’t be any fun, would it? You
might start to wonder what you missed. I can bring you into
our busy production room, or I could take you to somewhere
exotic and exciting and alien, like the humid, verdant jungles
of northern Brazil. Words, when used correctly can capture
a moment, a feeling, a place, or an event. They can cheer
you up, they can haunt you, scare you, or make you laugh.
It all just depends on the order in which they are arranged.
Illustrations and photographs have this same power on our
minds. They don’t use words to communicate, but they
can be just as expressive and personal as a poem or a short
story.
I love words, and that’s why I am so excited to tell
you about Citrus College’s new online literary magazine,
Litrus. Litrus—a historic Citrus publication—is
an outlet for students to share their private worlds. I want
you to take us to your secret place, the place where you keep
your fantasies, your daydreams, your |

nightmares,
your hopes, your unique vision of the world. Our content is
entirely made up of poems, short stories, essays, plays, illustrations,
and photographs from the students, faculty and staff of Citrus
College. That’s what sets Litrus apart from the other
publications put out by Citrus College. It’s not reporting
on current events, it’s not commentary on popular culture
or politics, and while all these things are reflected in the
content we put out, each issue will introduce something completely
new and different and special.
Litrus is definitely a labor of love. It’s been a great
experience putting the first issue together. For most of us,
it is our first time creating something like this. We are
all learning as we go, and that’s what makes it fun.
Of course, looking at our website, you’d have no idea
we are all making it up as we go along. The amazing look and
professional feel of our site is due in a large part to the
skill, talent and dedication of Aaron Castrejon, our art editor,
and Ben Horack, our webmaster. Still, Litrus would be nothing
if not for those members of the Citrus College Community who
take a chance and submit their own work.
After all, any story, no matter how good, is worthless if
there is no one to |
|
to
tell it and no one to hear it. We have our stories, our worlds
to share with you. What we need now is for you to come and
visit. In all honesty, our stories and visions have no value
if you don’t come and add the spark that brings them
alive. Maybe, after you visit, you’ll feel the urge
to go out and create something completely and absolutely your
own. If that happens, then we on the Litrus staff have succeeded.
And maybe, after you have finished creating something, you
will want to share it with us.
Our site is www.litrusmagazine.org,. We will be here, waiting
for you. Come and experience the worlds created by your friends
and your peers. You can read it all at once, or you can stop
by every once and a while, and take it slow. We promise you
that it will be worth your time.
*Litrus is currently accepting writing, art, photography
and audio mp3s for issue 2, set to launch Wednesday, Dec.
11. For information, contact Sarah at citruslit@yahoo.com
